Does anyone know about starting a Dominican Bank account as a non-resident?

-

Question by Obamas Shoes: Does anyone know about starting a Dominican Bank account as a non-resident?
I hear the interest was really good and they have international banks to protect the accounts from failure. When I was there some ex-pats were gettting great APRs and living mostly off of interest. Can I set up an account from the US?

NO… you have to GO THERE IN PERSON to set up that account. They aren’t getting that great an interest, though. Anyway, you will need to deposit ,000 in any bank in the D.R. if you plan to move there.

I’m thinking of retireing out of the US. Anyone have any suggestions?

-

Question by Poppa Puff: I’m thinking of retireing out of the US. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am going to retire somewhere where it is “dirt cheap” to live. Some reasonable medical facilities for American’s in the area would be best. Thinking about Costa Rica. Many places I have checked into used to be cheap but as more and more American’s have retired to those places, the definition of “inexpensive” or “cheap” has changed. While some of these places are still reasonably, they are more than I would like to pay. Moving to another country with another family or companion in similar circumstances to share expenses with would not be out of the question. To old to take chances so I would definetly do a background check on anyone I would consider living with. I am 55 and would like to make this move within the next year. Should I first visit the location you suggest and if so, any suggestions on how to get the real feel of the place you suggest? My needs are few and I prefer a location with mild climate, down to earth people, and not a bunch of hustle and bustle. Thanks!

You might want to consider Thailand. Nice friendly people with accommodating culture. Medical services are pretty advanced with reasonable pricing. Cost of living is relatively low compared to other cities in Asia.

Before you decide to move to Thailand VISIT FIRST! There are lots of US expats living in Thailand, and the Philippines for that matter, so you will have lots of countrymen to chat with and ask for advice. Visit first and ask around for suggestions. Lots of expats living in Pattaya which is cheaper than Bangkok for hotels. You can not own land in Thailand as a foreigner but you can buy a condo.

Also post your question on these travel forums and a see what comes up. Thai Visa Forum has a lot of good info on immigration (over 50 it is pretty easy,) read up on currency, precautions, etc.

Some of the things you have to consider is how far from your home country Thailand is. From Mexico it easier to get back to the US if you have to. From Thailand it costs a little more and takes a lot more time flying. Mexico is more like the US than Thailand will ever be. What they will have in common is poverty in some places and a little corruption.

Transportation is excellent in Thailand, the price is reasonable. From Thailand it is easy to get to many other countries by land or cheap flights. You can even take a train from Bangkok to Singapore if you want. I feel safer traveling in Thailand than I ever did in Mexico!

Good luck.
