Why do Americans and Europeans still travel to the Philippines when there is so much anti-American sentiment?

-

Question by .: Why do Americans and Europeans still travel to the Philippines when there is so much anti-American sentiment?
A 63 year old retired American (married to a filipina) was just killed outside of a busy market with lots of spectators and people around watching it happen. A filipino man casually walked up to the foreign man and shot him at point blank range then got on his motorcycle and drove off. There has not been an arrest.

A few years back an American Marine was accused of rape by a filipino woman that targeted foreign men for casual sexual encounters and marriage. There was no evidence against this Marine. The Marine was convicted on her testimony alone. The Marine was sentenced to life inprisonment and was only released because he paid the girl ,000 USD which caused the girl to recant and say she wasn’t sure that a rape actually took place. The girl is now married to another member of the US military and living in the USA.

With all of this anti-foreign sentiment why do foreign men continue to travel to the Philippines and get victimized by this corrupt and evil society? How come the USA and other European countries do not put up travel warnings and advisories and warn their citizens against the racism that they could encounter in the Philippines? The Philippines is just as bad as Iran in that there are hundreds of American citizens in filipino jails right now serving sentences for crimes that they did not commit.

Tax advice for Americans living/working overseas?

-

Question by zackadoo: Tax advice for Americans living/working overseas?
Ive been working abroad non stop almost three years (Jan 04-present.) And I Have not filed income tax reports since 2003. Originally I was studying and was paid a stipend below US poverty line (SS even was not withheld..)Now I am paid (as a teacher) entirely by a foreign company with my primary residence and all assets here. Since I never filed, (I may have had nothign to report) I am wondering what various options or problems I might have with regard to my U.S. taxes (both old and new) should I return to the U.S and find work teaching or in the public sector. Is it likely I would need to backfile or even a tax lawyer?

Best answer:

Answer by Mathew
If you have been outside the US continuously for those three years and your income never exceeded ,000 you should be able to exclude all of your income from taxation. However you will need to file a return for each year in which your income exceeded the total of your standard deduction and personal exemptions which would be about ,000 if you are single with no dependents. You should seek the advise of a tax professional in the US with experience regarding foreign income. If you have not lived in the US and don’t know where you are going to return to you should pick a state without state income to make you tax home. That part can also be a little tricky so interview the tax person to determine that they know what they are doing with regard to these issues.

My husband is rated at 100 percent through the va. Is there a way to get good medical care if we were to move overseas? Say like australia or someplace like that?

Best answer:

Answer by Dirk D.
No, you can’t just go on any base and receive medical care. Medical for veterans is handled through Veterans’ Affairs, which is an entirely separate entity from the military.
