Is there any areas in North America (islands included) where you could live off the land?

-

Question by ~-GaNjA-SmItH-~: Is there any areas in North America (islands included) where you could live off the land?
i dunno. i just see the world in a terrible shape. i thought of activism. but i would really like to just retire ‘city’ life and just head out to the wild an live off the land. Make my own home, or just roam about the land, living off food i get, from hunting or fishing.. just live what i call a ‘pure way of life’ with none of the crude corruption of every day modern life. e.g. greed, money.

I would say that you could maybe do this in North Dakota – you have to be tough though. But, food for thought — land is SUPER cheap there. And this land is very fertile — its all farmland – grains, sunflowers, pototoes you get it. I know lots of people who also have gorgeous gardens – supplying all the vegetable and fruit needs. Hunting options are also very abundant – deer, duck, pheasant, grouse, fishing, ice fishing…
THe people in NOrth Dakota are wonderful. Small towns are everywhere I grew up in a small town called Tioga, ND (pop 1200 or so) but they are dotted across the state. I would say you should check out this website. It’s an initiative started to boost numbers in this state that is dropping in population…it will give you a better idea of what it would take to live in Nodak! A wonderful, wonderful place to grow up and raise a family – low crime rates – no cities (the whole state is less than one million!) But I’ll let you read for yourself. Good luck! http://www.prairieopportunity.com/

The Best Places to Live in America Top 10 Small Towns Money Magazine CNBC Said Pittsburgh this morning LOL Top 10 Small Towns July 2009 – Some places have everything any family could want: economic opportunity, affordable homes, good schools, safe streets, and an all-around terrific quality of life. Where are those places right now? To find out, MONEY Magazine dug into that question in a big way, amassing scores of statistics on small towns (those with populations of 8500 to 50000) throughout the country. How is the quality of life is in Canada compared over America?

-

Question by ookaninam2000: How is the quality of life is in Canada compared over America?
This question is more for ex-pats who were American citizens and immigrated to Canada. Or for Canadian citizens who lived on both sides.

I was thinking of working and living in Vancouver BC in a IT position for a few years. Who knows? If I like it enough I might immigrate. I feel that the quality of life in America has been degrading for the past couple of years. HMOs, foreclosures, inflation, the upcoming recession, fear-mongering demagogues, lack of gun control, longer work hours that isolate communities, the amount of crap put into food, rising illiteracy rates, etc. The list is getting longer!

As a law-abiding American, who pay taxes, volunteers, etc. I feel that although I’m doing the right things in life and for my fellow man, I feel the system is designed to bleed you here. Do Canadians or ex-pats feel that in Canada?

Is being negative towards america, considered anti american?

-

Question by ////: Is being negative towards america, considered anti american?
First of all I like living here. But here is my qualm. Why are we constantly being indoctrinated with the notion that America is superior to all other countries? Are we so arrogant as to say that we are better than Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and Austrialia? Why are we better? We make no effort to protect the environment. Our public education is inferior and we pay our teachers poorly. Our health care system is the pits. We make no effort to change anything if it’s not cost effective and if we do make cost effective items, big companies buy out the rights so that these ideas never see the light of day (electric cars anyone?) Yet if anybody is critical towards america they are labled anti-american (or a popular food item has its name changed, FREEDOM FRIES). Why are we superior? Who told us this, and what evidence to we have to believe this?
