Can anyone please explain to me about the retirement procedure of the Army after he is medically retiring??

Question by Michelle: Can anyone please explain to me about the retirement procedure of the Army after he is medically retiring??
My husband was injured in Iraq and he was put on this program and awaiting to be medically retired. Now, I just married him, and I am new to this whole thing, but he was supposed to be retired a year ago and he keeps saying they are postponing it over and over. He says they are getting his paperwork ready and then he gets close to the date he is supposed to go then he says he gets a call and that they postponed it. Not only that. but I asked him the time limit of how long he will be gone because he will have to go to his base he was stationed at, (which is Colorado) and first he said a few days ..maybe a week now he says 2 months…I am confused!!! Is this normal is there something about him and this that I am not being made aware of?

perfectly normal. medical retirements can take a year or longer before all is said an done. the Board has to go through everything and with all the people being injured and similarly separated it can get backed up fairly quickly.

This question is for teachers. I am new to this profession and I am curious about retirement planning?

Question by just julie: This question is for teachers. I am new to this profession and I am curious about retirement planning?
I am in my second year of teaching. I know that teachers have a retirement plan, as it comes out of our checks.

Many companies visit our school trying to sell insurance, other plans, etc. I am interested in knowing whether or not I need to do an additional 401k plan. I was approached last year by a person at out school offering 403 plans. This year it was 401K. Do I need to take part in these plans? What do teachers really need? I have heard from retired teachers that their retirement was enough without these types of plans, but I know that times have changed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. :)

It really depends on the type of lifestyle you hope to have when you retire. Many teachers that I know have said that between the pension and social security, it is enough to live on comfortably, except for the health insurance. These teachers often continue to work part-time jobs or substitute teach (in order to pay premiums) until they are old enough to receive medicare (that’s the one for senior citizens, right?)

Does anybody feel as crazy as I do about retirement planning and the downsizing they are doing at work?

Question by snowflakes: Does anybody feel as crazy as I do about retirement planning and the downsizing they are doing at work?
I am really worried about retirement and my current job. I can’t say that I really care about financial planners. Are there any people who feel the same way. What is the solution? One financial planner told me that 2000 dollars today will only be worth 700 dollars in 20 years. Now that to me is scary. The ups and downs of the stock market make me awfully nervous. I get touchy when it comes to these financial planners but I get touchy when I think that I’ve got to have 85% of my income to retire too.

I opted for early retirement 2 years ago. I began 40ik saving at its birth. I now live on the proceeds of my 401k only – I’m too young for social security.

I was surprised and delighted when I saw how much I was able to save in 20 years. I can live off my 401k for the rest of my life without even touching SS.

I cannot stress enough how beneficial it is to consistently save the maximum allowed. You will retire without worry.

BTW: I live on much less than 85% of my highest salary. You will be surprised at how little you actually need to live a good life. P.S. Try to own your own home as soon as possible – it helps.
