Question by : What was wrong with Argentina in the 2011 Copa America?
We haven’t won the Copa America since 1993. We were hosts this time, and were in a group with Bolivia, Columbia, & Costa Rica (easy teams). But we tied 1-1 and 0-0 against Bolivia & Columbia, but beat Costa Rica 3-0. Then lose on penalties to Uruguay in the quarter-finals.
So what’s been the problem w/ Argentina all these years? This year, we were hosts, we had that home advantage. Also they have so many world class players who play for huge clubs: di Maria, Higuain, Messi, etc. Why can’t they play as a team? Is it the coach, because he wanted to play like Barcelona, because Argentina played nothing like Barca. And the players, this is my opinion, but the only players I think that played well were Zanetti, and Messi. Here’s why: Zanetti: he’s 37, but that guy is a motor, he can play forever. He was able to switch so well between the offense, midfield, and defense. He plays like a 20 year old, better than some of our actual 20 year olds. Messi: I know people always say he sucks internationally & is only good for Barca. But he had 3 assists and actually played like a team. He actually passed the ball and wasn’t greedy. He gave his team so many chances on goal, and they choked. I hate people insulting him, he’s a great player, but w/ a team like Argentina, he can’t shine.
Now back to the players: what the hell? Higuain had like 7 shots on goal (passed by Messi BTW) vs Costa Rica. Lavezzi ran at 100 mph, going that fast he couldn’t pass the ball. Mascherano and di Maria kept diving. Also EVERYONE tried to be a hero. They were all greedy. The games vs Bolivia and Columbia, we tied, we didn’t play as a team. I was happy and relieved we beat Costa Rica, but only 3-0, against a crap team like that? And what if it had been Japan playing? They had beaten us in friendly months ago. With only 2 points that time playing Japan, we would’ve been screwed. Then we play Uruguay. Sure we let a goal in the 5th minute, but it was more of a rebound. Then we score on them. Here’s what really pissed me off. That goal took only 2 passes: Gago to Messi, Messi to Higuain. Why couldn’t we do that against 10 men in the 2nd half? And why in the 2nd half were we getting pressured by 10 men? 10 Men Uruguay were attacking more on 11 men Argentina. Really? Then we lose on penalties.
This isn’t just about the Copa America, this is also about the World Cup. All of them. I’ve waited 18 years for Argentina to win the Copa America again, and it’s been 25 since I last saw us win the World Cup. Each time those cups come by, my heart is broken again and again. We got 2nd place the last two Copas, and ever since the 1990 World Cup our best result has been the quarter finals. I admit it: we are overrated and these pass years we have been sucking ass. In the 2004 finals, we let a goal in the 90th minute, then lost on penalties to Brazil, and in the 2006 world cup quarterfinals, let a goal in the 80th minute, we lost on penalties to Germany. In the 2007 finals, we got raped 0-3 by Brazil, and in the 2010 world cup quarterfinals got raped again 0-4 by Germany.
Noticing a pattern here?
What is our problem? The coach, players, strategies, what? Is it a psychological issue, how we suck ass and haven’t won anything in almost 2 decades. We’ve had some of the world’s best players: Ayala, Cruz, Batistuta, Crespo. Each worked their asses off for the team, but sadly couldn’t win anything for Argentina. Is it going to be like that for the next decade, when Messi, di Maria, Zanetti, Gago, Lavezzi, Higuain, and Tevez retire? Are they too going to retire empty handed? What must we do to reclaim our position as a world power? Why is it we screw up the most important games?
