I am 22 years old. Assuming that I plan to retire at age 65, taking into account inflation and assuming I will have an average pension plan from work, how much do you think I should have saved up in order to retire comfortably and with peace of mind. A million? 2? What are your thoughts?

save for an EMEGENCY FUND FIRST> at 22 I would start after thaT by saving 10 percent of you GROSS income. as you get older and make more money still save 10 percent of ALL the wage increase that you get also. when you have saved 6 months salary in cash for an EMERGENCY fund then start again in another account for retirement. once youve saved 10 thousand then you can start investing. you need to get educated in investing along the way as you save cash for emergency.

My dad was employed at his job for about 30 years and had a good union with great heath benefits (health insurance and drug prescription medicine benefits). My mom is really sick and takes about 6 different prescriptions a month which are really expensive. Since my dad had benefits from his job had only had to pay a co-pay for the drugs. Now he retired and his job does not have retiree benefits. Is there any affordable way for my dad to get the drugs my mom need? She is already on medicare plan b but does not qualify for the prescription medicine part D. Any ideas?

Is your Dad on Medicare? If so he would have Part D which helps to pay for medications. If he has low income he can request Extra Help from Medicare to pay more toward the drugs.

If he is not on Medicare, some drug companies offer direct discounts online. Also Walmart is supposed to offer prescriptions but your Dad may have to get a generic if that is OK for him. So, contact the drug company for his meds and see if they have senior or low income discounts.

Why doesnt Mom get Part D. If she is in Original Medicare, she has to get Part D plan herself and shop around for it. Look at the Medicare website.

Hey,

Great to see you’re interested in Teaching English abroad. Have you thought about where you would like to teach? As the requirements in different countries can vary a lot. Generally most employers abroad will want to see that you have done at least 120 hours of TEFL training. As you have a degree you will find that you would be able to find work pretty much anywhere in the world.

I am trying to do some long term planning as to how much money I need to retire. Some people have told me that Social Security is not taxed. Others have said that a government pension is not taxed. I understand the taxes around 401K’s and IRAs. But the tax question around SS and government pensions will make a huge difference in my planning calculations.

Social Security IS taxed but things like disability which you get through social security is NOT. My father complained about this a LOT. Remember, the dollars you paid into SS were not taxed, but simply deducted from your income which WAS taxed. Any pension income is taxed. The advantage to being “retired” is that starting with age 62, you get a different arrangement with exemptions which effectively reduces your taxes. You need to discuss this with a financial professional who is up on the current legal situation for the tax details you need to make the assessment.

Right now I’m living in Germany serving in the Air Force. However, I would like to join the Guard through palace chase. I asked a recruiter but he told me I couldn’t join until I returned from overseas. I’m just getting a second opinion because as far as I’m concerned all recruiters lie. Thanks for reading!

Recruiter is correct.

You have to return stateside first.

It basically boils down to, they spent money to send you to germany, they have to recoup that money, by you serving your full assignment in germany, before they pay to send you back to the states.
