What should I be saving for retirement?

-

Question by BabyDoll: What should I be saving for retirement?
I am almost 25 yrs old and I know I need to be planning now for my future. I am currently contributing 4% of my salary to my work 401k. They match $.70 of each up to 15% of my pay. Right now, this is equating to about 00/year total contributions. We also have a company pension, but I don’t want to plan on that at all. Who knows if it will still be there when I retire and who knows if I’ll be at this job long enough to get vested (7years – I have about 1 yr in now).

I am also paying 0/month on my car and about 0 on student loans. I am saving about 0/month and do not have any credit card debt, except the occasional charges which I normally pay off within 2 months max.

Question by zebiano: What is a more effective retirement plan?

Answer by Rick B
Are you saving 50% of your income? If not, you are pretty unlikely to meet you goal. One of the biggest factors is that you would not be able to get health care between 55 and 65 unless you paid out of pocket. That would eat through a huge chunk of your money. Also, by retiring at 55, your money would need to last about 30 years. And, without social security in the beginning, you would burn through huge chunk.

Now, you might be able to semi-retire by 55.

Is Government or private enterprise responsible for the increased standard of living in the United States?

-

Question by sound_of_the_silenced3: Is Government or private enterprise responsible for the increased standard of living in the United States?
A large fraction of the improvements in the standard of living have come because private businesses have created new products, given people jobs, have generated profits, that raise people out of poverty and allow them to live fruitful and productive lives.

In comparison how has the government done?

They have destroyed the purchasing power of our money, forced our jobs overseas, and they take more capital out of the pockets of the consumers…………….

Which do you give more credit to for raising the standard of living in the United States?

Yeah life was so much better before government required you to get a polio vaccination.

And we all know how awesome living conditions were when Robber Barons controlled entire communities.

Question by John: I live overseas and I’m trying to call someone stateside, everytime I call them the phone keeps going beep?

over and over again, I have a phone that was ment to only call US stateside numbers but everytime I try to call the person it just keeps going beep
WTF?

Best answer:

Answer by jivepacketrat
There are a number of possibilities.
1_ The phone is in use. Not highly probable but possible.
2_ The phone line is defective, again over a long period of time not highly probable but more possible.
3_ The connections between where you are living and the number that you are calling are all in use. More probable.
4_ The phone is incorrectly configured, and you need to contact the company that installed it, to get it fixed.
5_ There is a problem with an intermediate switch between you and the number that you are calling.
If there is someone else that you can call, try them and if the problem is the same then it is probably 3, 4 or 5.
If you can call the other number then it is probably 1 or 2.

What would be the most economical boat to live on after retirement?

-

Question by russianheman: What would be the most economical boat to live on after retirement?
I plan to buy and live on a boat after I retire with my wife. I want to be able to travel on open ocean waters without problems and enough room to live comfortably. I’ve researched quite a bit–it seems a catamaran sailboat would be the most economical without compromising too much space. Your input is appreciated.

Boats and water there are always problems Cats are to wide for dockage in marinas. Best try and charter some different boats till U BOTH fine the 1 that fits U BOTH as there are a lot of divorces when boats and cruising come together. I have a 48 Sportfish and like it very Much. Had sail and cruised for 8yrs. Not again. To much work.Either it fuel or sails and both have there disadvantages and happiness.Take courses so U have a heads up before the deep plunge.
