Which is the safest Caribbean island ?

Question by Girl Savage: Which is the safest Caribbean island ?
for Americans (ex-pat or visiting) to live and work. Please consider frequency of tropical storms/hurricanes, crime rate, and political freedom/property rights.

I’d prefer English speaking and cheap, but I realize that is probably a stretch.

I beginning to think about relocating and so far it seems like Aruba, the Bahamas, or the Cayman islands are good candidates.

I live in the bahamas, their is some crime here but that is like everywhere, obviously their is more crime in big cities like Naussa, much less where i live, Andros. u can use american or bahamian currency here, they are worth the same, english is the main language, hurricanes do hit here… some bad some not but were fine and alive now and i’ve lived here 13 years with some evacuations….. just so u know tropical storms aren’t that bad, everyone stays in TRAILERS, they aren’t bad.

i don’t know much about these other islands….sorry.

As far as storms are concerned, Aruba is probably the safest of the ones you mentioned. It’s outside the hurricane belt, so it’s extremely rare for severe storms to strike there.

Caymen Islands all the way! The people were very friendly and everyone spoke english. The beaches were beautiful. I’m not sure what the cost of living was there, but I do know that it’s a tax free island. My husband and I plan on getting a vacation home there some time in the future! Good Luck with relocating!

The Cayman Islands would be the best from those points of view. But we were obliged to leave after Hurricane Ivan had devastated Grand Cayman and destroyed our home and Hurricane Ike has recently been pounding Cayman Brac. If you want to relocate, then you have to face up to the possibility of hurricanes wherever you go in the region.
